The surname Ruf(f)us is also derived from the meaning "red" as in hair colour or ruddy complexion. I am involved in a one-name-study of the surname Ruf(f)us but so far have concentrated on the English - having connected the Dartford and Bermondsey branches to the original Shropshire branch - which accounts for about 75% of the total Ruf(f)us population in England. I have not looked into the German variants, but would assume that they are not connected to the English branches.
