This is a brief summery of how the Rufus branches are connected:
Samuel RUFUS (an Iron moulder) was born about 1811 at Madeley, Shropshire. He married Cecilia MORRALL, who was born about 1804 at Newport, Shropshire. I’m not sure when they married, but as far as I know, they had four children:
Elizabeth RUFUS, born 1833 at Bermondsey, London
Samuel RUFUS, born 1835 at Bermondsey, London
Cecilia RUFUS, born 20th January 1838, Madeley, Shropshire
Ann RUFUS, born 26th October 1840 at Coalbrookdale, Madeley, Shropshire (have copy of birth certificate)
There was obviously a link with Bermondsey and the Rufus/Morrall families going back before 1833. Ann RUFUS married Richard MORRALL – was he her cousin or some other relation? On the MORRALL forum you mention Richard being the son of James MORRALL (how is he related to Cecilia MORRALL?) who owned a Tannery at Bermondsey.
Now there is another RUFUS branch at Bermondsey, though I’m not sure how they are related to Samuel RUFUS (if they are)
John and Ann RUFUS had a son, (Alfred) Henry RUFUS (A pastry cook then an upholsterer, born about 1809 at Cripplegate. London). He married Elizabeth BENSON, and I believe they had 10 children:
Matilda RUFUS (born about 1835)
Ann RUFUS (born about 1837)
William RUFUS (born 17th October 1839, Bermondsey)
Emma RUFUS (born 14th May 1841, Bermondey)
Edwin RUFUS (born about 1843, Bermondsey, married Amelia Venner SMITH. He worked as a tanner)
Alfred Henry RUFUS (born about 1844, Bermondsey, married Margaret LEWIS. He was occupied as a soda water bottler)
Elizabeth RUFUS (born about 1848, Bermondsey)
Sarah Ann RUFUS (born about 1850, Bermondsey)
Martha RUFUS (born about 1852, Bermondsey)
Alice May RUFUS (born about 1856, Bermondsey)
Now, going back to the Shropshire RUFUS families – there was a John RUFUS (a moulder, born about 1831, Dawley, Shropshire) who married a Louisa BULLOCK. John RUFUS was the grandson of George RUFUS (born about 1777, at Madeley, Shropshire) and Sarah RUFUS. I do not yet know who John’s parents were, or how he is related to Samuel RUFUS.
John and Louisa RUFUS had the following children:
William RUFUS (born 3rd September 1852, Coalbrookdale, Shropshire)
George RUFUS (born 18th June 1859, Dawley, Shropshire)
Samuel RUFUS (born 6th September 1861, Dawley, Shropshire)
John RUFUS (born about 1865, Dawley, Shropshire)
Thomas RUFUS (born about 1868)
Ann Ellen RUFUS (born 20th August 1870, Dawley, Shropshire)
?William RUFUS (born about 1874, Dawley, Shropshire)
Samuel RUFUS (born about 1811) had a brother, William RUFUS (born about 1796-1798 at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire). He married Sarah BACH? about 1818 and they had a son, William RUFUS (born about 1819, Worcester). Sarah died soon after and William remarried Mary TAYLOR on 25th December 1820 at Madeley, Shropshire. They then moved to Dartford, Kent and had six children:
Eliza RUFUS (born about 1826, Dartford, Kent)
Ann RUFUS (born about 1828, Dartford, Kent)
George RUFUS (born about 1831, Dartford, Kent)
Mary RUFUS (born about 1834, Dartford, Kent)
Ellen RUFUS (born about 1837, Dartford, Kent. She married in 1854 at Bermondsey)
Frederick RUFUS (born 1840, Dartford, Kent)
Mary RUFUS (nee TAYLOR) died in 1853, and William RUFUS (senior) then remarried again to Mary TANN formerly TERRINGTON? who died in 1858. William RUFUS (senior) died in 1859 at Dartford, Kent.
I am decended from William RUFUS (junior), who married Rebecca SAUNDERS in 1844 at Dartford, Kent. William was an iron moulder, like his father, and died in 1865 at Bermondsey. Again, a connection with Bermondsey, though I am unsure why the family was there. William’s widow Rebecca moved to Plumstead, Woolwich, Kent, where she remained until her death in 1897.
The children of William and Rebecca RUFUS were:
William RUFUS (born 1845, Dartford, Kent)
Emily RUFUS (born 1847, Dartford, Kent)
Edward RUFUS (born 1848, Dartford, Kent)
Arthur RUFUS (born 1850, Dartford, Kent)
Samuel RUFUS (born 1852, Dartford, Kent)
Mary Rufus (born 1853, Dartford, Kent)
Herbert RUFUS (born 1856, Dartford, Kent)
Jane RUFUS (my great great grandmother born 1859, Dartford, Kent)
Alice RUFUS ( b. 1862, Greenwich, Kent)
Of these children, William remained a bachelor and lived with his widowed mother; Edward, Samuel and Herbert died as babies; Arthur emigrated to Australia; Emily, Mary, Jane and Alice all married.
So I think your great grandmother Ann RUFUS (daughter of Samuel and Cecilia RUFUS) would have been a cousin of William RUFUS (junior), my 3X great grandfather.
