My grandfather was Arthur S. Rusk, 1884 to 1966, son of Elam S. Rusk 1829 to 1907 and Lucinda Spurlock Rusk of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. We were always told that the family came from Ireland, and that there was a large land grant given to our first American ancestor from Lord Baltimore. The story of the land grant certainly supports an Irish rather than a German origin, as Lord Baltimore was an Anglo Irish Lord. The land grant was in Baltimore County, and I was told somewhere within the present day city of Baltimore. The land was lost when the deed was lost, not sure of the details. When I was a boy I heard talk of my grandfather having court papers relating to the family's efforts to get the land back, sometime in the 18th century, I believe. Unfortunately, all the old papers in the attic of the old farm house were eaten by rats. I've just gotten interested in researching my family, so most of what I know, or think I know, comes from memories of what I was told as a boy.
