George Russell was protrayed by Buddy Ebson in the two movies "Davy Crockett and the River Boat Pirates" and "Davy Crockett King of The Wild Fronteer" by Walt Disney.
George Russell was the son of Major William Russell in the area that Rutherford Co., North Carolina which was formed in 1779. Major William Russell was born about the year of 1762 and died in Franklin County Alabama in 1825.
George Russell was born near the Walker Daniel Line about 1795 and was too young to shave in the War of 1812. He was married twice and had a son and daughter-in-law killed in a river boat explosion on the Red River. He also had a grandson that served as the Attorney General of the State of Texas. George had a great nephew, Bean Russell of Wise-Jack County Texas, in a Indian Massacure. George remarried about 1820 in Franklin County Alabama to Leah Jackson. and had about 6 or 7 more children. George Russell died about 1832 in Franklin Co., Alabama. Davy Crockett;s book of 1834 written by HIMSELF devotes two chapters to the war of 1812 and the Russells of Franklin Co., Tennessee. Crockett states that the Major William Russell was the father of George Russell and Captain William Russell Jr. Captain William Russell [married to Lydia Bean] was the son in law of >>Jesse and Elizabeth Mitchell Bean of Independence Co., Arkansas in 1837.

Fought in the War of 1812, 1 Oct 1812 to 1 Jan 1814. Was with his father's Company in the famous Battle of Horseshoe Bend, a bend of the Taladega River. He reported that he first served as a private in Capt Francis JONES' Company of TN Militia from 24 Sep 1813 to 1 Dec 1813, then transferred to Capt Wm RUSSELL's (his father) Spy (Scout) Company of Col BLUE's Regiment of TN Vol Mil and served from 1 Dec 1813 to 4 Apr 1814. Later in 1814 he served again as a private in Capt George MICHIE's Company, Maj
or Wm RUSSELL's Separate Battalion of TN Mounted Gunmen from 28 Sep 1814 to 27 Mar 1815.
About five feet tall, a farmer, dark hair, dark eyes, dark complexion. Description given by widow (Leah) in her pension application. He lived in Franklin County, TN, near Winchester, from the date of his military discharged until 1818, when he moved to Franklin County, AL. George's widow, Leah Jackson HUDSON RUSSELL applied for and received 80 acres of bounty land under BL Wt 48807-80-50 while living in Franklin County, AL. She also applied for a pension on 18 Apr 1878 while living in Lawrence County, AL, but the pension was denied. After several years of widowhood, Leah had married Archibald STOVALL and lived with him for a few years before divorcing him. Although she had cataracts on both eyes and could not see even to sign her name, she was not eligible for a pension because of the second marriage.
