James, Thanks for your info.I'm helping a cousin of yours, Kim Ryans, to pull her family history together.I was able to get both Tom and Margaret on the 1930 Federal Census. It's so cool to find families that way. Here's what I found on Tom's family: Tennessee, Roane County, 5th District, Enumeration Dist. 73-15, Supervisors District 6, Sheet No. 14A, printed page 236: Shown on Carditt Valley Road in Rockwood, Tenn. R1 starting on line 14. . . Ryans, Will (age unknown) HeadRailroad Forman (It also doesn't give an age for him at his first marriage. This is a first for me.Never ran into unknown age on a census before) , Cinda31wife (It shows her age at first marriage was 15 yrs) , Dallas14son , Tom*12son , Pearl10daughter , Jeneva9daughter , Irene8daughter , James6son , Ellis4 8/12son , Viola7daughter (this looks strange to me)
Two houses prior to Will and Cinda, there shows starting on line 3 Ryans, Alice67Head (her age at first marriage was 24 and she is shown as a widow) , Tom27son Murphy, Bill9g-son , Alma6 g-daught This Tom is a laborer for the railroad at that time.It also looks like the grandchildren are either of a daughter's or perhaps step children to Tom the son who is there.Given Alice's age, I'm wondering if maybe she was your great grandmother.Maybe we can work together to find out. Each of the above shows Tennessee as the birth state, and also shows that the mother and father of each was born in Tennessee
The other census where I found Margaret is also Roane County, I believe First Corinth District Point on April 14th 1930.Enumeration District No. 73-4, Supervisor's District No. 6, Sheet 14-A, printed page 75. The Dunlaps show up on Rockwood Pike Road in Harriman. They begin on line 8; Dunlap, John E.32 Headsection foreman Railroad (it shows his age at first marriage was 19 yrs) , Rosa29 wife (it shows her age at first marriage was 15 yrs) , Quentin11 son , Margaret6 daughter , Hazel5 daughter , James4/12 son And in the very next dwelling: Dunlap, George45 Head laborer RR section (it shows his age at first marriage was 30 yrs) , Delta41 wife (it shows her age at first marriage was 26 yrs) My guess because of the closeness of their ages is that John and George were brothers. No children appear in the George Dunlap household.
By the way, I subscribe to Ancestry.com and that is where I found these two censuses.I haven't had time to go back to the 1920 yet, but am certain I'll find the parents there as well.Maybe get back a little further then. Each of these above again show birth state to be Tennessee, with all of their fathers and mothers born in Tennessee, except for John E. Dunlap's mother, who was born in North Carolina.Of course, we have a way to go, probably before we even have a maiden name to work with, but I'll keep you posted on what I find and would appreciate it if you'd do the same for me.Don't know how much you've gotten into family history, but I've been doing it for about 30 years now and have found that each family member that I learn about, I eventually feel that they really ARE family and not just names on paper. Thanks so much for the information you have given me.I don't have your note right in front of me, so I'm hoping the names of Margaret's parents you gave are the same as those on the census. Hope to hear more good news soon! Donna PS - Feel free to email me privately also.
