My mother is Marion Arvilla Rydberg, daughter of Elof Oscar Rydberg and grand-daughter of John Johanson, who changed his name to John Rydberg when he entered the U.S. from Smaland, Sweden. His parents were Johannas Johnson and Ingeborg Lena Rydberg. Apparently he took his mothers family name because there were too many Johnsons, etc. The story was that his bothers August (Gust) and Peter Karl also took the same name when they came later. There was also a sister Alfreda. John and Peter died in Barronett, WI. Gust died in Shell Lake, north of Barronett. Alfreda died in Cumberland, south of Barronett. Johannes, brothers and sister came from Stockaryd, Sweden, which is in Smaland. They are buried in Lakeside Cemetary in Barronett.
I have information on John (Johanson) Rydberg and his parents, but little further back I have spent a lot of time in Cumberland and Barronett. Possibly again this week end. We are probably related in some way. I still do not know what Rydberg means or stands for. Possibly a farm or a red berry (cranberry or lingen berry?)
