Derived mainly from Burke's Family Records (1897), it contends that John de Haughton became known as John de Rylandes in the Thirteenth Century in Lancashire. This is the first occurrence we have found of any variation of the name.If you have evidence of earlier Rylands or Ryland, we'd appreciate knowing about it.
I believe that with or without the terminal "s," we share a common ancestry. Our board has other material about the Rylands family, including a biography of John Rylands, for whom the great John Rylands Library of Manchester is named.(Often called John Ryland's Library -- a misnomer.)http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.ryland&m=129
