Hi, Brian. Glad to connect with you. I hope your Nicholas is the same as my great-grandfather. If so, I would love copies of the letters to your grandmother and any information you have on the family.
My great-grandfather, Nicholas Elias Saad, changed his name when he came to the US in 1892. His real name was Nicholas Busaad (spelling may not be exact), born April 24, 1874 in Beirut, Syria, Syrian Arab Republic (Turkey) where he worked as a camel herder. His religion was Greek Orthodox. He settled in Michigan, married Alma VanNess, worked as a shoe repairman and owned a general store. Nicholas and Alma adopted my grandmother (their only child) in 1921. Nicholas died June 23, 1959.
In 1934, when your grandmother received those letters, my Nicholas would have been in Gratiot County, Michigan. And my grandmother would have been about 14.
Info is from family, census records, his WWI draft card, and his naturalization papers. Please let me know if they are the same Nicholas.
