Many of the descendants of George Kidman (1818-1858) have a first or middle name of Sackville, supposedly because his mother was sometime employed by the Sackville family. It has always struck me as odd that the name of an employer has spread so widely through a fmaily so I am looking for any insight!
George (1818-1858) was the only son of George (1781-1846) and Sarah (1772/73-1855) Kidman. He was baptised at Lambeth when his father was Steward to Lord Manners (Lord Chancellor of Ireland).
According to family notes, Sarah was baptised as a Whitehead, married a Coules, had two children, was widowed, then married George Kidman.I have been unable to find either marriage. One son, Thomas Coules, is in the 1851 census in Chalk Farm (as per the family notes), a 44-year old widower.
We do not know when Sarah worked for a Sackville or whether it was for the 4th or 5th Duke of Dorset.I note that the 4th Duke's mother married secondly the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.Did Sarah and George meet due to the Irish connection? Was Sarah related to a Sackville rather than being just an employee?
Any information, clues, theories or just wild guesses all welcome!
