This is very interesting.I had no knowledge of Rachel, and do not believe that she could have been a descendant of William and Ann Sale.(For convenience, I'll refer to him by his hypothetical birth year of 1725 to distinguish him from the other William Sales.
All of his children, from every indication, are named in his will, but no Rachel Gray is referenced there.
Don't you think that Rachel was likely a niece of William's?My hypothetical birth years begin with 1749 for William's oldest son Cornelius, who first appears in a record of Wilkes County (actually then part of Surry) in 1771.Thus, Rachel could not be the daughter of any of the sons of 1725 William.
You may recall the will, proved in 1735 in Essex County, Virginia of a William Sale (son of Cornelius) who was evidently rather young. If he left sons other than a William, the notes I'm looking at now don't tell me about them.
Then also there's the will of a William Sale who left several sons, including a William, per his 1747 will.Almost certainly, our 1725 William Sale who died in Wilkes County in 1788 is the son of one or the other of these Williams.
Your information suggests that 1725 William may have had a brother who lived long enough to have a daughter -- Rachel -- born in Maryland (I've never looked there for Sales!) at the same time when 1725 William was getting started on his family.
The fact that Rachel came to live in Wilkes County, and married a Gray, is certainly suggestive of a relationship with my 1725 William Sale, if not father-daughter at least uncle - niece.
As you no doubt know, 1725 William's youngest son Robert married a Gray -- daughter of James Gray Sr. (whose will was proved in 1815).Unfortunately, I don't know the given name of Robert's wife, as she died before the 1850 census, and the Wilkes County Sale family was horrible about releasing their wives' dower rights in deeds of sale.
What were the given names of Rachel's children? If we have a match to the unusual names of the 1747 William Sale's will -- like "Asael" -- it might be time to shout "Bingo!"
I would like to hear from you -- especially if you've found any trace of any Sale doing anything in Maryland -- but don't wait for that if you haven't found it.
