Ben -- I just now found your posting of March 13.Genforum didn't advise me that you had responded to my message about Cornelius, William & William Sale.
I haven't figured out just how all the Sales mentioned in the Caroline County order books tie in to each other, although at one time I did got through the order book entries at the Virginia State Library that were the basis for that book "Colonial Caroline."It would have been an easier task to sort this out, no doubt, if something other than the order books had survived from the colonial period.
There was a Thomas "Sails" who was in Granville County, NC from at least 1755 through 1761.Could this be the Thomas who marrried Molly Brooke?I recognize that, even if Thomas of Cornelius were down in North Carolina for a while, he died in 1790 (when his will was proved), and that when he wrote his will he was back in Essex County.
I note that Anthony Sale (son of Cornelius) had a son Robert Sale, but I imagine that that Robert Sale was a generation ahead of your man who married Ann Broaddus in 1794.
I found that the will of Cornelius Sale Jr. (proved in Essex in 1775) is the most helpful item in figuring this family out. However, I don't think it's sufficiently specific to give you much help.
