My understanding of the imprisonment is that it involved William and others of the Wilkes County militia taken by the redcoats in their devastating incursions into North Carolina. With Wm's age given as 61, we're certainly not talking about any William Sale of a later generation.
I have never done any research in Hawkins County, Tennessee, but it does seem like a logical place for that next generation of Sales to try out on their way west, as it's just on the other side of the mountains from Wilkes County.
With regard to the parents of the William Sale who married Ann (Nancy) and then lived in Halifax and Wilkes Counties, NC, I lean toward the theory that he was the son of William Sale the son of Cornelius Sale of Essex County, Virginia. That's mainly because our William named a son -- perhaps his oldest son -- Cornelius. But to my knowledge no one has ever satisfactorily explained what happened to the OTHER William Sale named in an Essex County will in this period. This was the one who had brothers named Asael and Robert.Hardly anyone even talks about that will because it's not tied up with anything else that I have seen. But it's there. For that reason, I don't think it's possible to rule out the possibility that we could actually be from that other line.I surmise that the testator might have been a younger brother of Cornelius. That's just a guess.
