In response to the question about Cornelius Sale, my tentative hypothesis is that two men with the same name, Cornelius Sale, were living in Amherst County, Virginia, at about the same time.
Cornelius Leroy Sale (1748 - 1808), my direct ancestor, was (I think) the son of Anthony Sale (born about 1702).Cornelius Leroy Sale married Jane Dawson (the very young daughter of Joseph Dawson) in Amherst County, Virginia on October 20, 1768.In about 1790, the family moved to Georgia.
Cornelius Sale, born March 29, 1773, was the son of John Sale (December 30, 1730 - March 30, 1815) and Frances Sanders.Dorothea Sale Goodman, "Root and Branch of the Sale Tree in America", at page 41, wrote (in 1939) the following regarding Cornelius Sale, sixth child of John Sale and Frances Sanders:"Served in the War of 1812. Never married and at his death was quite well-to-do. Descendants of his slaves who had taken the name Sale were still in Amherst Co. a few years ago."
Mrs. Goodman explicitly states that John Sale, Sr. and Cornelius Leroy Sale were brothers; that the John Sale who signed as surety for the 1768 marriage between Cornelius Sale and Jane Dawson was the brother of Cornelius Sale.If Mrs. Goodman is correct, Cornelius Leroy Sale (1748 - 1808) was an uncle of Cornelius Sale (born 1773).
