Re: "Where did the names of John Sale and Mary Ellen James come from?"
Mary Ellen James (born 12 Aug 1831), spouse of Robert Ryland Sale, was the mother of Lillie Lee Sale (born 18 Aug 1866).Mary Ellen James was my grandfather's grandmother, and so is listed in a family history my grandmother put together.I have that Mary Ellen James was the daughter of Garland James (b. 22 Dec 1789) and Sarah Peatross (b. 18 Aug 1790).
Also, Internet searches turn up these records, the first of which lists 'John Sale' as the parent of Robert Ryland Sale:
Name: Robert Ryland Sale Birth: 1805 Death: year Parents: John Sale Spouse: Mary Ellen James
Garret Family Tree:
Name: Robert Ryland Sale Birth: dd mm 1805 - Virginia Death: date - Hanover, Virginia Parents: John surname Spouse: Mary Ellen James
And someone else responded to my query as follows: "I don't know if there is a connection, but I have a Robert Sale in the same time frame and place. He married Mary Ellen James b. 1831, d/o Rev. Garland James and Sarah Peatross. They resided in or near Ashland, in Hanover CO. They had two daughters, Lillie Lee and Roberta. I know nothing else re Robert."
And recently a friend from the Sale family sent me a family tree that has:
John Sale married Fanny Samuel 3-31-1801 Children 1. Lewis Sale 2. Miles Clinton 3. Robert R.mar. Catharine Broaddus 4. Albert Gallatin mar. Mary Ann Pollard 5. Wade Hampton mar. Susan Miller 6. Moore Fauntleroy mar. Robinette Murray 7. Sallie mar. Wm. J. Murray 8. Louisaunmar. 9. Jane Columbia mar. Benj. Turner 10. Isabella unmar. 11. Esther mar. Cluverius
------ Then I think Robert Ryland Sale's wife Catherine died in 1862, and Robert R. remarried, late in life, to Mary Ellen James (as I have that their daughter, Lillie Lee Sale, was born 18 Aug 1866):
