When and where was your grandfather born, married and died? Whom did he marry, when and where? What did he name his children? That information should help narrow down the search for your great-grandfather.
I don't know of any Charles Salways (Solways) in Dorset and did not find any on the 1881 census. The name is far more common in Devon and Somerset.
