As a part of the Auto de Fe, the converted Jews were required to take a Spanish surname upon their baptism into the Catholic faith. This was to confirm that they were leaving their Jewish heritage behind and embrasing the Cathilic church. The Inquisition was established to determine if these converted Jews had actually converted or were just faking it. It was all a part of Queen Isabela's war against the Moors. She believed that the Jews were allies to the Moors and demanded that they prove their loyalty to Spain with their conversion. Then tortured them to confirm that they had truly converted.
