First, my married name is Gharazeddine but I was born to Barbara Myer and Lawrence Y. Savercool in Kingston, N.Y. I too remember my father saying that the Savercools were related to Benedict Arnold-but haven't assertained as yet if that's true or in what way the families are related.
After my mother and Larry split up, she met and married a man named Savacool! (Try explaining this to your school mates!) They met because she was applying for a job and the man hiring was named 'Savacool' and curious to meet a 'Savercool'! He told her that the story was that 2 brothers named 'Savercool' had come over in the mid-eighteenth century from Flanders, had had a falling out after arriving here and the younger brother then changed his name to 'Savacool'.
Anyway, years later, I found myself living in a Flemish area of Northern France. I met a lady who was a professor of Flemish studies at the University at Amiens. And she told me that Savercool is indeed a Flemish name. (Not only that, but she and many people I met there felt that I had a very Flemish looking face-they thought I was a native until I opened my mouth!)And that Savercool was a name that was very popular in Ghent, I believe.
A few years ago, at work here in Southern California, a fellow came into my shop to make a purchase. The name on his Visa? 'Savacool'. We started to chat, and he told me that he had always heard the same story-about the brothers and the younger one changing his name to 'Savacool'. His family and mine had come from the same places back east...so...
Well, I thought I'd pass on this information as interesting, if nothing else. Though, I have always been curious about the brothers Savercool-and their story and how they had that falling out!
