Does anyone have a copy of a will for the John Sawtelle who died in Groton in 1790?I have a picture of a handwritten paragraph that looks like a will for the John Sawtelle who died near Port Dickson in Broome County, New York. I am trying to figure out to whom my Edmund belongs.Edmund stayed in Binghamton (where New York John was) in late 1790 as prepared to move his family to Cayuga.Brother Levi was with him.New York John mentions sons John and Levi in his will. Also mentions daughter Millie who moved to Michigan and some of Edmund's children eventually migrated to Michigan.
BUT..in Cayuga County, in the 1800 census, you see THREE Sawtells (Sawtol, Sottle, Sottle) listed TOGETHER:Edmund Asa, and Levi.New York John does not mention a son Asa, at least not in the picture of the handwritten paragraph I have. But I understand the will of Groton John Sawtell DOES mention all three of those names. Also an Emma, and Emma Sawtell married William Coltrin who also shows up in Cayuga County.(Then they move to Indiana:might have stopped off in Erie County where Edmund ended his days.)
Both Johns must have been related somehow as several of their chldren bear the same names.
Just in what I've noted from the descendants of Edmund, though, it seems as if the first names are passed on from the mother's side.Just a "notion" I have at this point.
