Dear Peter and Alex, Some tentative contributions: 1. re the disputed inheritance; my understanding is that the extra children were born to Sarah not Tom. The father was cab driver, James Aldridge, and the three wereJames Aldridge Sayers (5 Nov 1859), Alfred Aldridge Sayers (11 Mar 1862)and Charles Aldridge Sayers (12 Apr 1864). I have the last cert and it gives the name as Charles Aldridge ( I believe he became known as Charles Aldridge Sayers but would need to check) - father James Aldridge, mother Sarah Sayers formerly Henderson, so this fits. There is some writing about Tom possibly having had a son called Powell but I believe this is uncorroborated. Another researcher has Annie O'Brien's death as 16 Dec 1935 (she researched in detail discrepancies in reported year of death and found they were caused by a second grant of administrationof her Will to George Albert Mensley, following the death of Tom, bearing the wrong year of death). The books say that her body was taken back to Australia to be buried alongside her children. 3. Wondering who, if either, was John Thomas out of John bap 15 Oct 1843 at St Nicholas Brighton to Charles and Eliza (Bell, I think) and Thomas bap 4 Jan 1846 ditto, unless I simply have the wrong family. 4. I believe, subject to error, that I have Tom back 3 generations and several Sayers offshoots. Also a big Mensley tree (my very remote link to Tom). Mensley descendants still living. 5. Tom erected a headstone to his mother Maria Thomas,in Brighton cemetery to his motherbut it disappeared. I could find only the general area of the grave. The inscription was "This stone is erected by Mr Thomas Sayers in remembrance of a kind and affectionate mother Maria, wife of William Sayers, born January 26 1782 died February 16 1859."
Will gladly supply more if required and don't mind being told where I have got things wrong.
