You are quite correct in that the Aldridge children were the biological offspring of James Aldridge and Sarah Sayers. They had nothing to do with Tom Sayers. Tom Sayers was nineteen when he met and took up with Sarah Powell who was parted from her still living husband. She adopted the Sayers name and went through a form of marriage with Tom. The wedding did not legitimize the children (Sarah and Tom) as the law then stood, it just formalised their birth certificates. This important fact proved to be a fatal blow to Toms' wishes that his estate of £3000 should go only to his biological offspring but was judged to go to the Aldrige children 'who were born in wedlock'. Mr Powell having since passed-on making Tom and Sarahs' marriage legal but still labelling Tom jnr and Sarah jnr as illegitimate. Poor old Toms'children didn't get a penny and their subsequent upbringing was financed By Toms old friend Gideon.
I have no reord of a son called Powell but it may have something to do with Sarahs first marriage. The only info I have about Tom jnrs' wife Annie O'Brien is that he married her on July 8th 1885, had three children ,two girls and one boy, who all contracted scarlet fever and died within eight days of each other in July 1895.Tom snr died January 25 1936 and Annie passed away eleven months later. Their ashes were interred in their childrens' grave in Australia. Sorry I can't help you with Charles and Eliza Bell. It was interesting to hear about the grave of Toms mother in Brighton , did you get a plot number? I hope this is helpful, quite a bit has been written about Tom and I,m sure there must be more in newspapers of the time. Good luck with your search should you find any more info I would love to hear from you, especially Toms siblings.best wishes Peter.
