Jill, I was excited to see your message posted on the genforum since I too am researching the Sayer(s)(Sairs) families of Whitby. By coincidence I am also researching Thomas who was born in Whitby in 1817. According to the LDS records of Whitby there were two Sayer(s)(Sairs) babies named Thomas christened in Whitby in 1817. One child was christened May 14, 1817 by his parents, Thomas and Frances Sayer. The second child was christened on September 24, 1817 by George Sairs and his wife Mary(probably Mary Cole). I believe the second child to be my ancestor. According to a statement given by one of his sons in 1892, George and Mary Sair and their family had emigrated from England to Canada when young Thomas was only 4-6 years old. When young Thomas Sairs bought land in Canada in the 1830's he identified himself as being the son of Thomas and Mary Sairs. According to the same records Thomas Sayers and Frances had four children...Isabella, christened August 2,1814, Thomas, christened May 14,1817, Margaret, christened January 10, 1820, and Ann, christened February 18, 1823. Likewise, George and Mary Sairs' family consisted of...Thomas, christened September 24, 1817, Ann, christened July 6, 1820, and George, christened April 26, 1823. I hope that I haven't confused you since I am eagerly awaiting your reply. Gwen, your Canadian kin-possibly.
