Descendants of Lawrence Swope
Generation No. 1
1.LAWRENCE2 SWOPE(YOST1) was born 1742 in Germany, and died 16 Aug 1794 in Huntingdon Co., PA.He married ANNA GROVE.She was born 1746 in Germany, and died 1799 in Huntingdon Co., PA.
Notes for LAWRENCE SWOPE:
All from Hagerstown, then Frederick County, moved to
Bedford and Huntingdon Counties, PA, before 1790, but
were in MD from 1750-1778.
Lawrence Swope (died 1794)in PA, Anna Grove died after 1794 in PA was wife of Lawrence Swope, they were parents of Mary Swope who married John Saylor. Mathias Saylor (died before 1790)in MD. John Saylor, son of Mathias and Magdelena Harry, born in Hagerstown about 1755 died PA before 1800. McCardle family were neighbors in Frederick County, MD and then moved to Burnt Cabins, Dublin Township, Bedford and Huntingdon Cos., PA.
His great grandson, A.W. Swope knew that they had been married in Germany and settled "on the Jacob Estep farm in Trough Creek Valley, Union Township, Huntingdon County, Pa." The first Lawrence's dates, which are on a modern tombstone in the Sheridan Schoolhouse Cemetery, Trough Creek, say 1742-1794. The date of death is correct, since his estate was probated that year, but 1742 is much too late for his birth. I am inclined to say that he is the Lawrance Swope wh served briefly in Jonathan Hager's company in the Frederick county, Maryland militia during the French and Indian Wars (probably in 1758). He was in Pennsylvania, Bedford county, Dublin township by 1773, and signed the 1779 petition. (I don't think that he moved - they just redrew the boundaries around him.) His wife is said to have been Anna Groff or Grove, but I have not found any documentation for this. There were Swopes, Groves and Saylors in the area around Hagerstown that later became Washington county, Maryland.
