Hi Ryan, I have just a little bit of info on Joshua & Martha SCAGGS. The 1870 US Census shows Joshua SCAGGS, 41, Martha SCAGGS, 33, Pleny G(?)SCAGGS, 10, John F. SCAGGS, 6, Frances M. SCAGGS, 4, in New Douglas, Madison Co., Illinois. Joshua is listed as a "farmer", Martha, "keeps house", the others "at home". It lists Joshua as born in IL, Martha in KY, the kids in IL. I question whether or not Joshua was born in IL, but that's what the census reads.
The 1880 U.S. Census shows Martha, now listed as 39(?) years old, still keeping house, and married to William HOHN, 49, a farmer. Also in the household are James HOHN, 2 (son), Adda HOHN, 3/12 (daughter), Plenny SCAGGS, 19 (stepson), John SCAGGS, 16(stepson), Francis SCAGGS, 14 (stepdaughter), Catherine SCAGGS, 18 (stepdaughter), Jackson SCAGGS, 7 (stepson), in Jarvis Township, Madison Co., IL. It lists Mr. HOHN as being born in VA, all the others in IL, including Martha who was listed as being born in KY, on the previous census.
I guess something happened to Joshua between 1870 and 1880. I haven't delved into this family much. It's my husband's family. There was a Joshua SCAGGS who served in the Union Army in the Civil War but he died in 1863 in MS so I don't think it is the same one. My husband descends from Joshua and Martha SCAGGS through their son John F., his son, John, his son, John, and his son, John. Guess what my husband's name is? John..and so is my husband's son. (It's like the Monty Python sketch with all the Bruces.) Hope all this is of some help. Let me know how you are related to Joshua & Martha.
