My gg-grandfather was James Scalf who was married to Catherine Beard. My daughter and I have been working on documention for this line for several years.
James and Catherine Scalf lived in Davidson County, Tennessee for at least thirty years.I have tracked them on the census from 1850 until 1880.Since the indexes are not complete I find a census in which the Scalf's appear and then search that area(sometimes the districts change) for the census before and after. I have found a lot of people that way, but it takes a long time.
In 1870 Davidson County, TN Census, 2nd Civil District, house 85, is John Scalf age 80, born in South Carolina, living with Litha Scalf, age 69, born in Virginia. In that same district is a Monroe Scalf, born in N Carolina, James Stewart, born in Virginia, as well as James and Catherine Scalf.
Throughout the years there are other Scalf's with connections to North Carolina and Virginia in the same Davidson County Districts. From everything I have read it appears to me that John Scalf, 80 years old in 1870, could be John Scalf, Jr, and that Litha Scalf would have been Brittian Scalf's wife. However there is so much documentation on these families in East Tennessee and Kentucky, it would appear that there would be something identifing these members in Davidson County??
Does anyone have anything that would help me document James Scalf in Davidson County,Tn to his parents? In every census it says his father was born in N Carolina?I think his father would be John Scalf, Jr but I can't prove that.
