Hey, I am a decedent of the Schenck/Lane line--I also have van Deursen--but anyway. From the things I have found, the Schenck and a slew of other family names were the first Dutch settles. They came in to what is now New York. They pretty named and populated that whole area. Some did move around and land in other states, not only in those you mentioned, but in IL as well (where my family is from).
In my research I also found "von Touttenbourg" mentioned as an ancester."Von" is actually German while "Van" is Dutch. If you go back far enough you have von Touttenbourg, then after him you have Edgar de Witto, then it changes to Schenck van Nydeggen OR Schenck von Nydegen (I think that is how it's spelled).I've seen both spellings used in different text referring to what I believe to be the same people.
So, what I am trying to say is that I believe that the Schenck family is both Dutch and German.
