I am seeking help from any Schermerhorn relative who knows anything about Cecil H. Schermerhorn. The information i have is very limited.
During WWII Cecil was a tail gunner on a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress which was based in England. This aircraft was involved in a take-off crash in January 1945 with the tragic loss of five of the nine man crew. Cecil was one of the fortunate crewmembers to survive. The official crash report states his name as Cecil H. Schermerhorn, but a diary of one of the crew names him as John or Jack Schermerhorn.
Following the crash an article appeared in the Stars and Stripes newspaper and stated that Cecil was from Kansas City, MO. Going by the ages of the rest of the crew Cecil was probably born around the early to mid 1920s.
After the end of WWII (i have been told about two or three years), Cecil was involved in a car crash. Apparently he was blinded by oncoming headlights and his car collided with a bridge, with the tragic loss of Cecil and his family. Despite numerous efforts at trying to locate the whereabouts of this accident, nothing has been found.
If anybody knows anything about Cecil please contact me.
