I am doing some research about an American woman named Jayta Humphreys (1881-1959). She was married, for a period between the world wars, to a German named Emil Schlemmer in Dresden, and it is regarding him that I hope this forum might be able to provide some information.
According to the genealogy website www.familysearch.org, Schlemmer was born 09 February 1890 in Santos, Brazil, and died in Dresden in 1970. He married Jayta Humphreys in Dresden in 1921. We know that he was also for a period theSiamese consul in Dresden; probably this is how Jayta Humphreys met Schlemmer, as her stepfather was the American consul in Dresden. The World Biography Index produced by the publisher Saur lists an "Erich Schlemmer" as consul of Siam in Dresden for 1935, but I believe this a mistake and it should be "Emil" - all other mentions of him that I have found use "Emil." Although the familysearch.org record states Schlemmer's death year as 1970, Jayta Humphreys's New York Times obituary (1959)says that Schlemmer died "shortly after the war," and she is referred to as Emil Schlemmer's widow. I believe she and Schlemmer lived in Switzerland, and later in Florence,Italy, during the war.
What I am trying to ascertain is when and where Schlemmer died, and any information that might exist about his life after 1921, when he married Humphreys.
Any information, or advice about where to get it, would bedeeply appreciated! Thanks!
p.s. - I am familiar with the earlier posting (2001) by Donna Ermatinger regarding Erich Schlemmer
