My Father was Raymond, his father Johann Frederick Ludwig and I believe his Johann Christian Martin who arrived with his father Carl Joachim David (Dov Schmuhl) on ship manifest June 1863. Who was Elizabeths parents? I was raised in the Fairwater/Ripon Area, RHS Class of 1968

Hello Dennis - glad to hear from you -
Yes, I find you in my family tree as the son of Raymond Howard Schmuhl and Lillian Evelyn Boening.
Your Grandfather would therefore have been
Johann Frederick and your grandmother Laura Alvina Sander. Your father had 10 siblings -
Your great-grandpaerents were Johann Christian Martin and Jacobine Keonore Marie Heidel. I am from the brother to Johann Christian Martin - Carl Johann and his wife was Friederike Marie Dorothee Prignitz.
His son was Richard J, Schmuhl and his wife was Emma Schroeder who was born in Dodge County. They had a son named William Elmer Schmuhl. He married Vivian Parker (born in Hancock WI) and their oldest daughter was my mother - Elizabeth Hildegard Schmuhl. She married Harry Lester Penke and in 1939 they had a son - ME - David
That side of the family appears to have lived in Green Lake County around Manchester and then Town of Metomen and finally Ripon.
As I was growing up I was aware that there were Schmuhl's in Fairwater and often asked my mother how they connected to her family in Ripon - she did not know - and usually she knew such things - However, I think she may have known more than she said as she did know some of the Schmuhl's from Fairwater and in fact we lived there for a short time right after I was born. Perhaps she did not know the details or had forgotten much of it,
I have also found another familywho were descended from Joachim Friedrich (1831-1912)(Another brother) and his wife (1st wife was Hohanna Marie Friederike Westphal).Johanna and Joachim came over in 1866 and had three children with them - They had another in 1869 - her name was Minna and she and Johanna are buried in Bonesteel Cemetery just west of Fairwater - Johanna died in 1875) Joachim then maried Augusta Paschke and they moved to the Dakotas (Madison SD) shortly after being married (1875) There they had I believe 13 children. Joachim used the name Joseph Frederick Schmuhl and he died in Bruce SD and was buried in Arlington SD - thereafter Augusta took the children and moved to the area of Jamestown Stutsman Co., ND - she died in 1944.
One of Joachim Friedrich and Johanna's children - Marie - married Julius Manke in 1878 in Kingston and they sat out to go to the Dakotas as well - perhaps to the place where her father and stepmother lived, but whn they got to Marshall, Lyon Co., Minnesota, a man they knew in WI pursuaded them to stay in Minnesota (maybe because Dakota was COLD and harsh - and many who went there, returned to WI later)
After I found the connection (with some help from a woman in Michigan and more help from a Schmuhl descendant in Milwaukee and a Heidel descendat in Florida) - Carl Joachim David Schmuhl and his wife Magdalene Maria Brandenburg - (they used the names David and Helene on the ship's manifest) I wrote to Lois and Harlan Schmuhl in the country just east of Fairwater and Lois helped to gather everyone from the family together and I made a descendancy report which I will send you if you want a copy (via e-mail) Hopefully it has just about all the Schmuhls in the Ripon/Fairwater area. - write me at dawei39@yahoo,com
At that time I was living in The Bronx NY but have now returned to Oshkosh.
Glad to make your acquaintance.Maybe you can add a few things I am missing -especially for your wife's family -
I will look forward to hearing from you.
