Many appologies for the latesness of this reply.I never got it sent to my email!
Martin Schneider was a German immigrant and farmer in Springfield, IL.Martin had MANY children who grew up and married and had farms and lives of their own that bordered on the family property (I think). As his kids were coming of age, the work on the farm diminished and he kept getting older and less able to do all that hard work. So, he went to the local adoption agency and picked out my grandfather (circa 1906).
My grandfather was 5-6 and kept his birth name always.Grandpa never appears on any census with anyone named Martin. I know that some concoction of German / pigeon English was the language they used.I do not know if anyone in the Schneider family went to school, but they chipped in to send my grandfather because they felt he was the one who had a different future. Good thing, as it turns out.Martin lived through the Great Depression and was in a sad state and my grandfather sent monthly checks to sort of adopt him in reverse; to say thank you.
My grandfather's birth family spent decades hunting for him and found him way out west and reunited the family together.
Just wondered if there were Schneider relatives out there. Thanks wherever you are!
