---- Other merchants included Charles Schnitger, who received a grocery store license in 1846, and who served as Barbersville postmaster from November 18, 1852 to April 13, 1854, and again from December 11, 1854 to July 17, 1857. Robert G. Benefiel, Barbersville postmaster from April 13, 1853 until December 11, 1854, is also listed in the 1860 census as a merchant. Schnitger would soon move to Canaan were he is buried. ----
Barbersville seems to have existed from about 1820 to about 1880 in Jefferson County IN, on the Ripley County border.
I don't know if this helps anybody, but at least it's something interesting about Charles.
I am descended from Charles through his daughter Cynthia and her son Lewis McCaskey. Like everyone else, I'm looking for information about the parents of Charles and his wife Emeline.
Thank you, Pat, for the information you've posted to this forum in the past.
