Interestingly there is a memorial stone in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome recording the death of A Giovanni Scholey which reads:
IN QVESTO OSSARIO SONO I RESTI MORTALIDEL TRENTASEIENNE LONDINESE GIOVANNI SCHOLEY CHE LASCIANDO FAMIGLIA E RICCHEZZENON ESITAVA AD ACCORRERE ALL'APPELLO DEL SVO DVCE GARIBALDI CONSACRANDO LA SVA NOBILE VITA A MENTANA PER LA LIBERAZIONE DI ROMA------IN SEGVITO ALLE GRAVI FERITE RIPORTATE NELLA GIORNATA DEL 3 NOVEMBRE DECEDEVA VENTICINQVE GIORNI DOPO IN ROMA
A loose translation of this is:
IN THIS OSSARIO THERE ARE THE MORTAL REMAINS) OF THE LONDON THIRTYSIX YEAR OLD GIOVANNI (John) SCHOLEY WHO LEAVING FAMILY AND RICHES DID NOT HESITATE TO RUSH TO THE APPEAL OF DUCE GARIBALDI CONSECRATING HIS NOBLE LIFE TO MENTANA FOR THE LIBERATION OF ROME LATER ON FOLLOWING THE SERIOUS INJURY BROUGHT BACK THE THIRD DAY OF NOVEMBER PASSED AWAY TWENTYFIVE DAYS LATER IN ROME.
Given that he was 36 years old and died 25 days after 3 November 1867 these facts accord with the details for the age and the date of the death of the John Scholey mentioned above, i.e. 28 November 1867. The fact that both show that they died in Rome is more than a co-incidence. Surely they are one and the same person.
