Hi! I am looking for William Schubert who came to Ohio and opened a contracting, planing and building business in Norwalk, Ohio. HE IS NOT A RELATIVE! He did build my home and I am currently researching other homes in my neighborhood for similarities in construction and interior work.
The preliminary information I have is this: he had a shop in Norwalk, Ohio (behind our home) and one of his sons, Frank, built and lived in the house next door. I found William in the Ohio Census, listed as born in Pennsylvania. Also in the Ohio Census is listed his wife, Lydia P. and I did find a marriage record for Williams Schubert and Lydia Perrin in Wood County, Ohio in 1866. A search of PA Census records turned up ONE William Schubert (and his father, mother and siblings) in the 1850 Berks Co. PA census in Longswamp Township. I'm not sure when he came to Ohio but he died in Norwalk, Ohio in 1914. I will pick up his obituary next week at the city library.
If you have any information on William and his business, I would appreciate a note. I am researching the neighborhood for inclusion as a historic district to slow and perhaps eventually stop the decline in single-family residences along my long block. These grand old homes are chopped up for apartments and very little of existing structures is recognizable today on many houses. Further research will determine how many structures on this block were built by William and his son(s). Thank you.
