I am seeking any information on the family of my GG Grandfather, Herman (Hermon) Alexander Schubert (Shubert).Born 12/21/1843 in Gnesen, Provinz Poznan. His father, Herman (Hermon) Alexander Schubert (Shubert) died in 1875 and his mother Deborah ?? died after 1887.Both father and mother are thought to be born in Germany.
My GG Grandfather came to the US about 1857 – 1865 entry in US in New York and stayed there about three years or so.Ended up in Granger County, TN, north of Knoxville, Knox County, TN.First historic record is 7/5/1868 when he marries an older widow, Hannah Beeler.Shows up in the 1860 census, taken 7/6/1869, as Hermon Shubert, a farm laborer.
Herman had a known brother, born 12/19/1845, in Rogowe, (Rogowo?), Posen, Prussia.Shows up for first time in 1870 in Union County, TN marrying the 18-year-old daughter of Herman’s new wife, Hannah. Dies in 1880.1st buried in family cemetery.
Another brother or cousin shows up in 1877/1878 in Knoxville, TN, a Jacob Schubert born in Prussia. In 1880 census is listed as from Prussia and has one other person in household, a sister, Rosalie, Single, white, female, keeping house.Jacob lives with in Hotel with Herman’s family.Jacob dies in 1885.2nd buried in family cemetery - with Alexander.
Jacob’s sister, Rosalie disappears off the radar.
Godspeeds history of Tennessee written in 1887 says that Herman was the oldest of six children.Gives date of father’s death and mother still living. Two siblings dead at that point. One is Alexander and the other possibly, Jacob.Herman living in Knoxville, another sibling living in Chicago (Rosalie?), another living in Berlin and another living in Australia.Says Herman came to New York in 1857.
That is all that I have concerning Herman that might be useful.Herman was intelligent, could read and write.Ended up owing the Hotel and was appointed to be on the Governor of Tennessee’s staff for two years as Commissary General.
