I am a Schülke/Schuelke great granddaughter. My great grand-father was Gottlieb Schuelke, born 10 July 1841 in Bielsko,Posen, Prussia. He was baptised 18 July 1841 in Strelno; his family was Lutheran and his parents were Johann Michael Schülke and Anna Dorothea Kietzmann. Gottlieb was the 10th of their 12 children and one of 4 Schuelke brothers to emigrate to the US and settle in Wisconsin. The others were August (b 1830), William (b 1834) and Michael (b 1843). All settled and lived the remainder of their lives in the neighboring WI counties: Winnebago and Waupaca.
Gottlieb married Emilie Braun (b 1847) in Strelno on 21 February 1868 after serving in the Prussian army. They left Hamburg for NY on 25 May 1868 with the family of Herman Braun, Emilie's brother aboard a three masted clipper ship, the S.S. Saxonia. They settled in Winnebago Co, WI and farmed there until 1894 when they bought a farm in neighboring Waupaca Co. Gottlieb and Emilie had 11 children and all lived to adulthood, giving them 49 grandchildren.
Gottlieb and Emilie sold their farm in 1904 and retired to the small town of Symco, Waupaca, WI where they lived until their deaths in 1930 (Gottlieb) and 1936 (Emilie). They (and many of their children)are buried in Little Creek Cemetery, which is across the street from their Waupaca Co farm.
The remaining 3 Schuelke brothers had large families and there are many, many descendants in these WI counties and throughout the nation.
