Sister Marcella was born on November 20, 1916, in Minneapolis, Minn. She was the first of ten children born to John and Elizabeth (Haviland) Schuller. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minn., on August 12, 1932. She made her first profession of vows on August 10, 1934, and final vows on August 12, 1938. She was a Franciscan Sister for 79 years.
Sister Marcella was a loving and compassionate person whose spirit of giving seemed endless. At the age of 50, after 18 years of serving as an anesthetist in many Franciscan hospitals, she generously volunteered to serve in Vietnam through Catholic Relief Services. She called her four years as an anesthetist as part of that medical team one of the most enriching experiences of her life. She said, "It was a dangerous time, but when you are in God's work, He is with you." She truly loved the Lord and served Him through those He put into her life.
As she celebrated 75 years as a Franciscan Sister, she stated, "It is a special blessing to be part of a group of religious women devoted to contemplative prayer and who are examples of prophetic witness in peace efforts, care of the poor and ecology. I thank God for my call to this community."
Sister Marcella was preceded in death by her siblings: Patricia Ball, Margery Mazurek, Gerald, John, James and Francis. Survivors include sisters: Betty Jo Schick, Aberdeen, S. Dak.; Therese Van Zuilen, Faribault, Minn.; Joan Heuer, Rosemount, Minn.; and her Franciscan Community.
