Donald L. Schwab, the son of Louis and Grace Donaldson Schwab, was born on March 28, 1918 in Lakefield, MN. He moved with his family to Fulda when he was one year old. Don grew up in Fulda and attended school in Fulda. He started working at Anderson Lumber Co. in Fulda until the start of WWII when he was drafted. He left on New Year’s Day in 1941 and served in the medical corps in the U.S. Army. Don was united in marriage to Ramona Ramert in Seattle, WA on October 9, 1944 and was stationed in San Francisco, CA. After his discharge from the service at Camp White in Oregon they returned to Fulda. They bought and managed the Fulda Lumber Co. from 1946 until 1978. Don also was the P.R. Man for AMMI (Allied Midwest Merchandiser Inc.) based out of Sioux Falls, SD. Along with a group of four other independent lumber dealers, they put together a group-buying yard for independent yards. In 1980 Don was elected to do the public relations work for them, which included four states (IA, NE, SD and MN). In his 18 years of service he tripled the company’s membership of buyers. Today it it’s one of the largest wholesalers of building materials in Sioux Falls and is strictly a cooperative. Don passed away at the Worthington Regional Hospital at the age of 89 on Thursday, February 21, 2008. He was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church. He was also a past member of the Fulda Fire Dept., a charter member of the Elks Club in Worthington, lifetime member of the Fulda American Legion Post 318. Don was also an Benefactor of the National Rifleman’s Association and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed giving tours and showing off his game farm for migratory birds which he shipped to Canada and across the nation. Don was an avid hunter of waterfowl and did extensive hunting in Canada and in the west for big game. He also enjoyed target and rifle shooting especially at his range outside of Fulda. He also occasionally collected for allied. Don was a well-respected businessman thru out the upper Midwest.
Survivors include his wife, Ramona of Fulda; three children, Sheryl Heger of Woodbury, MN, Ron Schwab of Fairbanks, AK, and Roger Schwab of Fulda, MN; two grandchildren Tiffiny (Scott) Heger Grossbauer and Abby Heger and one great-granddaughter, Livia Grossbauer. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Schwab.
Funeral services at St. Gabriel’s Church, Fulda, MN at 10:30 AM on Monday, February 25, 2008 with Fr. Bob Horihan officiating. The organist was Dana Hogan. The song leader was Lloyd Winter. The pallbearers were Jerry Steiner, Gary Fiedler, Dennis Paplow, Mark Ramert, Doug Schwab and Curt Brinkman. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Aanenson, Eddie Reusse, Dell Goedtke, Bob Barnes, Doc Schwarz, Larry Schindler, Irv Larson, Chuck Lursen, Edgar Schultz, Walt Bruns, Joe Grandgeorge, Randy Kremer and Gene Winter. Interment at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery.
