SCHWEINSBURGH FAMILY GENEALOGY FORUM
Welcome (WILCOMEN) to the new SCHWEINSBURGH/SCHWEINSBURGHER FAMILY GENEALOGY FORUM opened for researchers of the SCHWEINSBURG/SCHWEINSBURGHER Family.
If you are still spelling this name SCHWEINSBURGH or SCHWEINSBURGHER you are probably still speaking Deutsch. And, in this case the most believable origin of the name came after those called Schweinsbergher because they lived around the Schloss Schweinsburgh, in Hessen, Germany. This name has changed from Scheinsburgher to Schweinsburg, to Swinsburgh to Swinsburg and eventually became Swansburg. There are several other variations in the name. The name Swinburgh, the name Swinburg, and the name Swanburg are amongst them.Suffice to say that in the following generations no two brothers spelled the name the same way.Take a look at generations #2, #3, and #4 and you’ll see what I mean.
My side of this family is the Nova Scotian side of the family. It contains the descendants of CHRISTIAN SWINBURG and CATHERINE HARPEL. Christian was born in Hesse, Germany. He was born about 1750 and died, August 16, 1827 in Trinidad. He was a Hessian soldier, serving as a private in the Hessian Kassel-Regiment, Landgraf. (He was on the regiment muster roll in New York in 1783). The ship Privateer called "NELSON", shows Christian Swinburgh's occupation as an armourer. He was captured by the French and taken to Trinidad, where he worked as a prisoner of war (POW) on a sugar plantation, until he died. Christian married Catherine Harpel, in New York. The Harple’s were Loyalists to the Crown of England and members of the family served within Loyalist Regiments. Catherine was born about 1755 (Purportedly in Prussia) and died November 27, 1847 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada.
