Followed this discussion about the origin of the name Schwerdtfeger, which was quite interesting, my Hans Bahlow German Name Lexicon gives it as 'Weapons smith' or in
German 'Waffenschmidt', of course in connection with swords, which includes the
cleaning and polishing, but that's not why
I write, I happened to check the name in the
www.google.com and there are hundreds of entries, showing how often the name is still
represented in Germany, not in America, where you may find the name as Swerdfeger or
even Swardfeager. While checking Google you
may find my contribution which was the translation of the good Reverend Johann Samuel Schwerdtfeger's church records in
the Eastern District of Upper Canada, now Ontario, where he was lovingly named the
Saint of the St. Lawrence River.JHM
