We have corresponded in the past.I descend from Harriet Scrimshaw who went to Australia and New Zealand in 1859 on board the ship Hooghly.Until recently I did not knowwhich county in England she was from.I recently learned from a newsclipping in New Zealand that Harriet Scrimshaw who married Charles Lorraine Phelps came from Leverington Cambridgeshire, England.
In the 1841 census in Leverington it shows the following: Scrimshaw: Elizabeth 20; Sarah Jane 12;Harriet 4; William 2.
I think the above Harriet is my Harriet Scrimshaw who was born in 1837 or 1838.
I am wondering if you know anything about the Elizabeth age 20 to 24 who could be my Harriet's mother. She must have been married to a man whose surname was Scrimshaw who was not listed in the census.I think Sarah Jane age 12 must have been a relative who was there helping Elizabeth with the two children.I think she is the Sarah Jane Scrimshaw b. 1828 who was part of the family of William Scrimshaw who married Mary Marchbanks which you write about.
In the 1851 census Harriet is 15 and is working as a servant. Her brother William 13 is living in Clenchwarton Norfolk with Uncle George Scrimshaw 33.There is no mention of Elizabeth.I wonder if the father and mother are dead.
In 1858 or 59 my Harriet left for Australia as a General Servant and then went on to New Zealand where she married Charles Lorraine Phelps. I notice that your Ann from this family also went to Australia.
Because the name Harriet comes up many times in the William Scrimshaw family who married Mary West and Mary Marchbanks, I am wondering if in your research you have come across this Elizabeth Scrimshaw I refer to above who had two children, Harriet and William.
I would appreciate your comments and possibly a next step for me to follow.I see you have researched this William Scrimshaw family quite well.Sincerely,Eleanor from California.
