Through years of research and help from other genealogists Ifinally have figured out my lineage and how my Seth Family came to Arkansas.
George W. Seth Sr was born in Queen Anne county Maryland in late 1799 or early 1800. He enlisted into the US Army on January 15th, 1823 in Baltimore Maryland. His enlistment papers list him as age 23, born in Queen Anne County, 5 feet 10 and 1/2 inches tall, green eyes, dark hair, and fair complexion. His occupation is listed as a shoemaker. His term of service was for five years. This is how he ended up in Arkansas in 1828. exactly five years after he enlisted. He shows up in a Sheriff Census for Hempstead Co. Arkansas in 1828. He was most likley stationed near by in the Army at either Fort Smith, Fort Gibson, or Fort Towson near the Red River just over the border in Oklahoma. His service is up in January of 1828 and it appears he liked the area and he decided to stay in the area to make his way in life. His children give us his state of birth which is Maryland which verifies the Military record. Both his daughters Sarah Seth White and Julia Seth Steward give their fathers birth state in the 1880 census.
Over the next twenty two years from 1828 until his death in 1850, George Seth is a member of the Seiver county community. He marries Mahala (Unknown last name) sometime between 1828 and 1830. In 1830 George W. Seth is listed in the Hempsted co census with his new wife and no children. In 1840 he is listed again this time in Sevier Co Arkansas, which was created from Hempsted so he probably did not move he and his wife have several children in their household in 1840 census.
George Seth Sr probate is dated in 1850 indicating he died that year. It lists his children and his wife in the probate. The 1850 census also lists his wife and children by name in Seiver county. In January of 1853 Goerge W. Seth SR's wife, Mahala Seth dies leaving several young children and a few adult children with no mother or father. The young children to include my gg grandfather George W. Seth Jr are farmed out to neighbors. Several of the young girls are married by the mid 1850's.
Land Records: George W. Seth SR also purchases 80 acres of land from the governent in late 1849. 40 acres in Sept of 1849 and 40 more in November of 1849 just before he died in 1850.
Our Akansas line has been linked to a direct descendent of Jacobus Seth from Maryland through DNA in 2010. I used my Y DNA and had a known decendant of Jacobus Seth test his as well. The desendant was Thomas Seth of Pennsylvania. Thomas Seth is a direct decendent of Jacobus Seth through James Seth the 1st line. We shared 43 of 44 markers tested putting Thomas Seth and I very closely related within ten generations, which puts our common ancestor after Jacobus Seth. This proves the George W. Seth from Queen Anne County in Maryland that joined the US Army in 1823 in Baltimore Maryland who was a decendent of Jacobus Seth is the same George W. Seth who ended up in Arkansas that is my direct ancestor.
The only Seth family living in Queen Anne County during the 1800 census with children the age of George W. Seth is the family of James Seth and Juliana Seth. I have eliminated every other line and Seth family in Queen Anne county and for that fact every other Seth family living in Maryland. The family of James Seth and Juliana Seth is the only one left and to date this James Seth is the only Seth that did not leave a will or probate that I can find. All the other Seth males in Maryland during this time period did leave a will or probate, which lists their children.
James Seth first married Sarah Grant in 1789 and had three sons by her that are listed in the QA 1800 census along with a fourth son (George W. Seth Sr) born abt 1799. A church record recorded the death of one of these sons in 1801. Leaving two children from this union. James Seth next married Julianna Cheeves in 1798 obviously after his first wife had died. There were two children that were produced during this union. My George W. Seth in late 1799 or early 1800 and a younger sister name unknown before 1802 when James Seth died. James Seth dies on January 28th, 1802 leaving a widow with two step sons and two of her own small children in her care.
In the 1810 Queen Ann census Julianna Seth is listed as a head of household with two children in her household a male over ten, which is George W. Seth and a younger sister. The two older boys from the first marriage are not listed in the household. They are most likely young adults by this time.
A James G. Seth who dies in 1824 with a young family might be an older brother and a Charles Seth listed in the QA County 1820 census and who married Harriet Reed in 1819 could be his other older brother. These two male Seths are not documented in the other Seth lines leaving them most likely under this line.
so finally through DNA, extensive research using the wills and probates of the 14 great grandsons of Jacobus Seth I can say with out any doubt that George W. Seth Sr my direct ancestor who was born in Queen Ann County Maryland in 1799 or 1800 is the son of James Seth and Julianna Cheeves. Which gives my lineage as the following
Jacobus Seth Charles Seth the 1st John Seth the 1st James Seth married Julianna Cheeves George W. Seth Sr George W. Seth Jr Isaac F. Seth Sr Isaac F. Seth Jr Gregory F. Seth Jarrod L. Seth ( me ) John T. Seth
