Looking for more information on the George Baltzer Shafer/Shaefer/Shaeffer/Schafer family who lived in Manheim Twp, Lanc Co PA in the in other Lancaster twps in the 1800s.
***Note*** George Baltzer gets confused at times with an older Johan Baltzer Shafer who also lived in Lanc Co, esp since they were both called by their middle names in legal documents.J. Baltzer died in Jun 1769 and his burial record is listed at the First Reformed Church, stating he was 85y 2m old.He married Anna Margaret and had several children baptized at FRC.His will is dated 1769 and lists children Jacob and Frederick. *****
George Baltzer Shafer and his wife Maria Barbara first show up in Lancaster County as their daughter Margaret is baptized in 1755 at First Reformed Church.Their oldest son John was born in Europe, probably Germany, and they had the following children baptized at FRC as well. The records are written in German:
Nicholas b 18 Mar 1759 Anthony b Dec 1760 Peter bap 28 Mar 1762 Michael (born abt 1763 but no baptismal record) George b 5 Apr 1767 Baltasar b 28 Jul 1765 John Jacob b 21 Oct 1770 Susanna b 20 Apr 1772
FRC has a burial record stating: Baltzer Schaefer burried Dec 19 1781, 65 yrs 0 months. The FRC's burial record for Maria Barbara states:Burried 30 October 1785, 56y 4m 19days.
The Lanc County Orphan's Court Record in 1785 appoints Christian Petrie (oldest son John's father-in-law) guardian over the minor children of George Baltzer of Manheim Twp.All the living children are listed, and they are: John Anthony Peter Michael Balzer (minor) George (minor) Susana (minor)
During the American Revolution, Baltzer and John Shafer take the foreign oaths of allegiance in Lancaster County. The only other Baltzer Shafer that lived in Lanc Co (Johan Baltzer Shafer) has died at this point. It does indicate G. Baltzer Shafer came to the US 1752-1755.
Manheim Twp, Lanc Co tax lists: 1758 No Shafers 1759 Shaffer, Baltser 1771 Shaffer, Balzer 1772 Shaffer, Balsor 1779 Shefer, Balt 1780 Balt Shafer 1781 Shivar, Peter 1783 Schaffer, Barbara freeman Anthony Scheffer 1785 freeman Anthony Sheffer 1786 freeman Anthony Sheffer 1792 Anthony Sheffer
A Baltzer Shafer was naturalized in 1762 in Lancaster County, but it could have been the other Johan Baltzer Shafer who died in 1769.
Known information about the children of Balzer and Maria:
John Shafer, born abt 1752, married Julianna Petrie, daughter of Christian and Johnette Petrie. They had children Christian, Mary Barbara, Catherine, John, Johnette, Elizabeth, Julianna. He died in Lanc County abt 1813.
Anthony Shafer is listed in the Manheim tax lists, then disapears before 1800.Is he the same Anthony who died in Lancaster Co in 1820?His inventory does not give any link.
Peter Shaeffer married Susanna Gusman at FRC in 1786 and served in the American Revolution.Three of his children, Susan, Sophia and George are baptized at FRC.In 1793 they move to Martinburg W Virginia. He later gets a federal pension.
Michael Shaefer is likely the Michael Shaeffer who married Rosina Sipe at FRC in 1789.They had several children baptized at FRC and later lived in Leacock Twp, Lanc Co, which is very close to Manheim. There is no proff linking this Michael to G Balzer's Michael, but because they are the same age and their is no other Michael Shafer unaccounted for, the link is likely.
A Balzer Shafer is listed in the 1810 Lampeter, Lanc County census, but otherwise, there are no further records of Baltzer (Jr), George or Susanna Shaefer.
