When Kate Stowell and her sister Sarah Stowell married father and son, Calvin Harlow Shapley and Willis Shapley, they may have brought Mayflower blood into the Shapley line. The sisters are the descendents of Isreal Stowell.
In the Stowell Genealogy by Wm. Henry Harrison Stowell, published 1922 by the Tuttle Co., on page 34 is Israel Stowellwho married Abigail Fuller, daugher of Lt. Samuel and Mary Fuller.
In the Mayflower Families Through Five Generations book, Volume Four, 2nd Edition, on Pilgrim Edward Fuller, on pages 8-9 is Samuel Fuller information who is the grandson of Pilgrim Edward Fuller (through son Matthew Fuller). The listing of Samuel's children includes "Abigail b. ca. 1674; said to have m. Israel Stowell of Hingham but no primary source has been found for this marriage."The references quote the "Stowell Gen. pp.34-5,MQ 54:204 (1988) (Abigail, wife of Isreal Stowell.)"
Here is the lineage: 1. Edward Fuller and wife(both on Mayflower) 2. Matthew Fuller (presumably stayed in England until ca. 1640, d. Barnstable Co. between July 1678 and 22 Aug 1678 (date of inventory)wife Frances -----. 3. Samuel Fuller b. ca. 1630, married Mary-----, d. Rehoboth 26 March 1676. 4. Abigail Fuller b. ca. 1674marries Israel Stowell
I was raised by my stepfather (Shapley) who is a descendent of this lineage of the Stowells and there was never a mention of a Mayflower connection. Yet, in doing genealogical research I find this. The index of the Mayflower book does not contain any other Stowells. If this marriage could be proved I feel that this whole lineage would be eligible to join the Mayflower Society or at least honestly claim that they are descendents of the Mayflower Pilgrim Edward Fuller.Actually, Edward, his wife, and his other son, Samuel, were on the Mayflower, along with Edward's brother, Dr. Samuel Fuller, the physician of the Pilgrims.Edward and his wife died the first winter, so Dr. Samuel raised young Samuel. Matthew Fuller, the Stowell ancestor, was left behind. He came over later. There is a Fuller Society that tells about the 2 brothers who were on the Mayflower, on the internet.
If one wanted to join the Mayflower Society, once the marriage was proved, the Stowell book would either be sufficient evidence for the Society or show where to get the needed information. Then one would have to pick up where the Stowell book left off.Surely there are enough descendents to do the needed work to re-claim the Mayflower heritage.
I have the Mayflower book on Edward Fuller because I am a descendent through young Samuel.Iimmediately knew the connection when I looked at the Stowell information and saw the name. The shock came when I realized my mother and beloved step-father (both are deceased) were actually cousins!!!
