Because of the record destruction during the wars in Stafford County, Virginia we have been deprived of the information to track Thomas Sharpe and his children. However, by carefully examining what information is available we can reconstruct most of this family.
John Sharpe of Northumberland County married Mary Linsfield and had three children – John, Linsfield, and Mary.Mary Linsfield Sharpe was widowed and married Thomas Knight.
We know the children of Linsfield from his will left in King George County. The oldest was Thomas Sharpe Sr. who had a daughter named Elizabeth who was born about 1745 who married Benjamin Weeks in King George County around 1765.
Mary Sharpe married Benjamin Parks and moved to North Carolina and and some of the family moved into North Georgia.
John Sharpe another child of John Sharpe and Mary Linsfield was born in Northumberland and moved to Richmond County along with Linsfield and Mary.Richmond was later divided to form King George County.King George was divided about 1776 and the part that contained John and Linsfield was included in Stafford County.
This John Sharpe mentioned above had only one son mentioned in the records of King George County. This son was named Thomas Sharpe and referred to as Thomas Sharpe Jr. to distinguish him from his first cousin Thomas Sharpe, son of Thomas, who was the eldest son of Linsfield Sharpe and Francis. This son was referred to as Thomas Sharpe Sr.
We know from a deposition that this Thomas Jr was born in 1721 and would have been around 62 years old when our tax list transcriptions begin. Also by 1774 he appeared to have been widowed when he took a mortgage from John Bland Company in London.
Finally, he appeared to have married a Nugent.Nugent researchers have assumed that Francis, wife of Linsfield Sr was a Nugent. This was based on incorrectly assuming that Capt Linsfield Sharpe of Fauquier was the son of Linsfield and Francis. As previous post have shown, the Linsfield, son of Linsfield and Francis, died in Stafford County around 1800.As we will show in this post, Capt Linsfield Sharpe of Fauquier was the son of Thomas Sharpe Jr. of King George County.
Now that I have set the background up we can pause for a short lesson in genealogy. Many of us have been thrown off track at one time or another by the Senior/Junior designation.I have seen many family histories confused and mistaken because they fail to understand that Junior was not necessarily the son of Senior. It was simply one of many mechanisms used by County officials to identify two people with the same name living in the same county. Thus we have John Sharpe Sr and his nephew John Sharpe Jr and of course Thomas Sharpe Sr., first cousin of Thomas Sharpe Jr.
Now with the background and notes out of the way we can begin constructing this family.Although there are many more members to talk about we will deal mainly with Thomas Jr. of King George County who became Thomas Sr. of Stafford County after his cousin Thomas left King George County and moved to Fauquier County.
I had used the information from the book “Stafford County Virginia Totals 1723-1790” (a two volume set by John Vogt and T. William Kethley, Jr) to determine that Thomas Jr of King George was listed as Thomas Sr. of Stafford. I am attaching the information from those lists.I reviewed the disk from Binns Genealogy of the tax rolls from 1783 to 1813 to get the rest.I will review each year to sort out the Sharpes of Stafford County.

(2) Indicates there were two tithables - The landowner and 1 other.
Note:I did not follow the non-Sharpes through each year.Just tried to show their presence at appropriate times.
Also, only noted a couple of Simpsons, Beasleys. The Fants and Abbotts are also listed but not included here.
There were usually two separate tax list for each year and designated roll A or roll B.
Only some years had date listed which gives us an idea of proximity. If two different people were listed on the same date it was a good clue that they were close neighbors.
Finally, the taxable ages changed. Some years listed a white taxable at age 16 and other years listed 21 years.

The Sharpe with no first name listed with a total of 2 tithes over 21 appears to be Linsfield Sharpe. The Thomas Sharpe with 2 tithes over 21 is most likely Thomas Sr as he appears to have a sizeable amount of property.Remember, this is now Thomas Sr. who was previously Thomas Jr. when living in King George county and the son of John Sharpe, who was in turn the son of John and Mary Linsfield.

Again we apparently have Linsfield and Thomas Sharpe Sr.I had the chance to review these original tax records and I can see why Thomas Jr may have not been picked up.

This is interesting since it gives the dates so that we can see the approximate vicinity of each one listed. Also important since it now shows John Sharpe, the Son of Thomas Sr. and William Sharpe, the son of Linsfield Sharpe.Remember that this Linsfield is the son of Linsfield, the son of John Sharpe and Mary Linsfield. This Linsfield was referred to as “Linsfield Sharpe, the younger” in a later deed document. This Linsfield was the co-executor of his father Linsfield Sharpe of King George County.

Again because we don’t see a name listed does not mean he wasn’t there at the time.I challenge any one to accurately transcribe one of these hard to read tax lists.
Petition to the House of Delegaes to fix the court seat near the center of thecounty.24 May 1779
Lincfield Sharp (This would be Linsfield the younger, son of Linsfield and Frances)
Thomas Sharp (Since his name appears next to Linsfield above guess that this is Thomas Sr/Jr of KG)
William Sharpe(Appears to be son of Linsfield the younger)
Thomas Sharpe (must be Thomas Sr. son of Linsfield the Elder)
Robert Sharpe (Since name appears next to Thomas above it may well be a son of Thomas Sr of KG)
Benjamin Sharpe (Appears to be the son of Linsfield the Elder of KG)
John Sharp (To young to be son of Thomas Sr/Jr of Stafford)
Laurence Washington (Either father or brother of President Washington)
This ends the two volume works I referenced at the beginning.
This next tax list is from “Binns Genealogy, Stafford County, Va – 1783-1813 Personal Property tax list”.
I spent many hours carefully transcribing the information and then re-checking it.Some years will overlap the information above. If there is a conflict then I would favor my information since I only dealt with Sharpe related info and was much more interested in the accuracy of what I copied.

Sorry for the long winded posting but since little is known of this family and many are having problems putting it all together.I hope soon to post information on the families in Fayette and Pendleton, and Fauquier counties.I have accumulated much information on the families and would love to work with anyone who is willing to put real effort into researching them.I can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
