William J. Sheehan Family and friends of William J. Sheehan, 86, will gather for visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at St Patrick's Residence Chapel, 1400 Brookdale Road, Naperville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John P. Smyth in the Chapel at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines. He passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at St Patrick's Residence, Naperville. He was born in Zionsville, Ind., in 1920, and during the Depression moved to Chicago with his family where he graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep (1938). During this time he won a Chicago Tribune city-wide contest, earning his first set of golf clubs. He attended Loyola University, where he majored in history. Before completing his degree he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served abroad during World War II. After the war he completed his degree at Loyola on the GI Bill. Shortly thereafter Bill met his wife, Pat, at a Catholic Club women's dance at the Edgewater Beach Hotel. They married June 28, 1952. Their family grew and settled in Skokie, Barrington, and later Elmhurst for 15 years. Living in Elmhurst, they were active in their parish, Immaculate Conception, where Bill chaired "The Night of Jewels" fundraiser. Additionally he was on the board of Illinois Benedictine College. In his professional life, Bill was president of the Victor division of the Dana Corporation and in 1977 was promoted to corporate vice president of personnel and moved to Toledo, Ohio. During his time at Dana, Bill attended Harvard University Business School. Upon retiring from Dana Corp. he became the executive in residence at the University of Toledo. In 1990 after retiring from UT, Bill and Pat returned to the Chicago area settling in Glen Ellyn. For several years he volunteered his time and expertise to Maryville Academy. Despite having struggled with Alzheimer's in his last few years, Bill lived a long and full life marked by the joy of family, dedication to work, and the love of golf and a good meal. Those who knew and loved him have many fond memories. He is the devoted husband of Patricia (nee Smyth); beloved father of Maureen, Patty, Bill, Michael, Kathleen and Megan; loving brother of Irene and the late Charles; and playful grandfather to Sheila, Neil, Owen, Johnny, Clare, Kaeleigh, Kaitlyn, Maureen, Ben, Celine, Malachy, Erin, Rory, Liam, and Annie. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials in William's honor made to The Rev. John P. Smyth Standing Tall Foundation, 1100 N. River Road, Des Plaines, IL, 60016 or St Patrick's Residence. Arrangements were made by Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, Naperville, 630-355-0213.
