Thank you for responding to my query of 2005.I am interested in learning what sources you have researched and will be happy to share my findings and sources. If you prefer, you may do so by regular e-mail (address is shown by clicking on the link for the poster's name or the "print" link).
Van Buren Baughn was Sarah Catherine Baughn's brother.
That is confirmed by the 1850 census for Gadsden County, FL, as well as by the 1860 census for Baker Co., GA (listed as Vaughan)
She went by Kate Baughn and was born in 1835 in Quincy, FL.
By she, you mean Sarah Catherine Baughan, not Catherine Sheffield. This is the Sarah Catherine Baughan who first married Milo Grow, and then James H. Bodiford. Her only child was Roy W. Grow (1861-1938).Census records consistently show her to have been born in North Carolina.
Their parents were G. William T. Baughn and Sarah Elizabeth Jarrett.
I am interested in your source for the name of the father of Kate and Buley (as Martin Van Buren was called). In official records I find him only as Carter T. Baughan, with no reference to William. If you have a document (such as a Bible record) that shows him as "William," it might be helpful in nailing down the identity of his father and mother.
They also had a brother named William Baughn.
William appears to have been the only son of Carter and Eliza who was born in Florida, along with sisters Missouri and Louise. The family appears to have gone to Florida from South Carolina with the Jarretts sometime between 1844 and 1847, and left Florida for Georgia between 1850 and 1860.
I am interested in learning about Martin Van Buren Baughan (He later dropped the second "a.").There is some indication from the census that he first married a "Molly J." A descendant identified her as Mary Jane Martin and identifies two children by her -- Charles B. and Maude.before he married Martha SHEFFIELD, who is shown as a daughter of Catherine Sheffield (shown as mother-in-law in 1880 census). It seems that three of Buley's children were by Martha--Jessie Baughn, Irma Kate Baughn (m Dr. Peter Eager Wilkin -11 ch), and Dr. Edgar Buren Baughn.I am hoping that someone can provide information on what became of the three children, and their descendants, if any.
There also seems to be a SHEFFIELD connection with Cornelia Baughan, sister of Kate, Buley and Willie. In 1880, W. B. Baughan was 23 and a farmer in Limestone Co., TX.His mother, Eliza, was 60 and born in SC.In the household was brother-in-law R. B. Crocker, 30, and sister "Neley" [Cornelia Louise] Crocker, 27.Also present were nieces and nephew Edwina, John, Kate and Sue SHEFFIELD (ages 13 to 5) all born in Georgia to Cornelia's first marriage to JOHN SHEFFIELD.I would be interested in learning of the descendants of those Sheffields as well.
