I am trying to find parents and/or siblings of Elizabeth (Schildknecht) Shelnut. She is my only direct tie to the Shelnut family and her life has thus far been elusive. The information I have indicates that she was born about 1798 (*probably a bad date, however, see below) in Edgefield, SC.
Elizabeth is known to have married William Dorris (who was born in 1750 in County Down, Ireland and emigrated to Virginia in 1769 and then moved to Edgefield Co., SC) and they had four children: Margaret Dorris, b:1785, Edgefield, S.C.; William G. Dorris,b: 1796, Edgefield Co., S.C., d: 8 MAY 1854, Pike Co., AL; Catherine Dorris, b: 1799, Edgefield, SC, and John J. Dorris, b: 1797, Edgefield, S.C., d:17 JUN 1863, Carroll Co. GA.
I believe the date given above of Elizabeth’s birth must be wrong since each of her children were born before 1898 and her husband would have been 48 years her senior.
Elizabeth is thought to have died in Abbeville District, South Carolina, but the date of her death is unknown. William Dorris also died in Edgefield Co., SC., but conflicting dates of 1781 and October, 1818, are given.
I am particularly interested in the family of George Shellnut (Schildknecht) whose son William was born in Edgefield, SC, on December 23, 1802.I can’t help but wonder whether this George (I believe he was a Corporal with "The South Carolina Royalists") could be related closely to the Elizabeth I am searching for.Elizabeth’s husband, William Dorris, was also known to be a Loyalist.
I would be deeply indebted to anyone who can offer me any additional information of the early history of the Shelnut family in this area of South Carolina. Thanks!
