My Shelton Ancestors
It is said that one Shelton ancestor gave his name to Britain, and one was the first Royal convert to Christianity. Some of the Shelton ancestors aided Apostle Paul with his work as stated in the Bible, and one initiated the naming of infants (before that, only adults were named according to various attributes--physical, personality, occupation, etc.).One Shelton ancestor was the aunt of Queen Anne Boleyn, beheaded by the orders of her husband, King Henry VIII, and one served with General George Washington in the Revolutionary War.
Sir Ralph Shelton, the English progenitor of the family, probably did not come to America as he died in England in 1628. His son James, born in the late sixteenth century, came to Virginia possibly as early as 1610 as he was in Jamestown in 1620. James had two sons, John and James, the former being the one who, in 1670, built the plantation known as "Rural Plains." His brother John, born about 1649 in York county, Virginia, married Jane ( ), fathered another John and William who married Hannah Armistead in 1698 and inherited "Rural Plains" - one source gives Thomas as the father of James and John.

Notes for Giles SHELTON:His headstone shows Geirls Spencer, my grandmother’s family bible had Girles, the 1850 Patrick Co. census has Giles, marriage and death records shows Gerald, it has also been Giles Gerald.Another place shows his name as Jarrell. When census and other information was collected, many would write down the way they thought the name was spelled based on how they heard it pronounced. His record of birth has his name as Gerald. The information about Nathan SHELTON and Mary HATCHER being the parents of Giles came from my grandmother's family bible, and was given to me about twenty years ago, this bible has since disappeared, but I personally obtained the information for a school project.
Nathan SHELTON BIRTH: c1800 Franklin Co., Va. DEATH: abt. 1862 Franklin Co., Va
Married: Mary "Polly" HATCHER, BIRTH 4/13/1800 DEATH 1894 Children: Giles Gerald SHELTON, other children unknown at present.
Notes for Nathan SHELTON:SOME RESEARCHERS BELIEVE GILES WAS THE SON OF JOSIAH SHELTON, JR..I do not have bible information on Nathan’s parents. It is my belief Josiah Shelton, Jr. was instead the grandfather of Giles.Documentation shows that Josiah SHELTON, Jr. (born 1775) married: Frances "Futhey" Ford (b. 1779) on 16 May 1797, and had the following children: Mary, John S., Frances, Giles.Based on the year they were married, children should have been born 1798, 1800, 1802 and 1804 certainly not 1818.
Of those researchers who believe Nathan was the son of James Shelton, Jr. born 1760 s/o Capt. James Shelton, Sr. b. 1726, who was the son of Ralph Shelton b. 1680. (James Shelton, Jr. was Ralph Shelton's grandson, and Josiah Shelton, Jr. his great grandson). These two men were cousins - and both lines used the names Giles and Nathan in naming their children. Due to a lack of verifying documentation at the present time, I could only base my decision that he was the son of Josiah Shelton, Jr. on the marriage of Josiah Shelton, Sr. and Elizabeth Spencer, and the later marriage of Giles Shelton and Nancy Spencer. It was fairly common in those days for first and second cousins to marry.

Notes for Mary Crispin:
There is no primary source information that Mary's maiden name was Crispin. Some researchers have postulated this because she had a son Crispin (which is also a saint's name). Mary was named as an executor of her husband Ralph's will, proved March 1733 (1). Her will is in Amelia Co.and was written 30 June 1750, her second husband was William CLARK. Her will was probated 29 Aug 1770 and she was noted as of the Parish of Nottoway in Amelia County (2). Her sons Crispin SHELTON and John SHELTON witnessed her will (2) and she also left a legacy for her grandson Reuben SHELTON of 1 shilling sterling (2).

On 8/25/1326 Ralph de SHELTON was involved in saving the life of Richard the Lion-Hearted at the Battle of Crecy at the dawn of the Crusades. Richard was cut off from the main body of the English Army and his father refused to come to his aid- saying that a future king had to fight his own battles. Richard's father, King Edward, awarded Ralph with a title and an estate at Norfolk- the town square in Norfolk is still called Shelton Square. A very English name, but before Ralph it is thought by some that they were Scot or Irish
