Jeremiah McLene was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1767 and later served in the militia during the American Revolution. He attained the rank of Major General by the war’s end in 1783. At the conclusion of the war, he moved to Chillicothe where, on October 11, 1798, he was appointed Sheriff of Ross County, Ohio by Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory.
In 1806, McLene was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives; two years later, he became Secretary of State and served in this position until 1831. In 1832, he was elected to the United State House of Representatives for Ohio’s 8th congressional district and served two terms before losing re-election to a third term in 1836. He died in Washington D.C. on March 19, 1837 before he could move back to Ohio. He was buried in the United States Congressional Cemetery.
