:There is no Road to Wealth so easy and Respectable as that of Matrimony: Anthony Trollope. 1815-1882 DR THORNE 1858 Ch.16
For years the marriage of Helen Sheridan and Robert Dudley Blake remained a secret, even from their own family and friends. The reason for this secrecy was most probably because Robert, son of a wealthy aristocrat, was already in his forties at the time of the marriage, his wife was a child of ordinary, some would say working class parents who was still in her teens.
The marriage took place in Gorballs Scotland in 1819 where the bride's name was recorded as helen Sheridan. When Robert Dudley Blake died in 1850 he bequeated everthing that he possessed to his wife Helen, in a will, which he made in 1831, twelve years after their marriage.
When Helen died intestate, in 1876, she left behind a vast fortune but no known next-of-Kin. When it became public knowledge that the deceased womans name was Sheridan-a very common surname. especially in Ireland, claims cropped up from far and wide, like shoots of the scarlet pimpernel.
The road to Helen Blakes fortune was to prove long and arduous, it took me many years to reach my journey's end.
