ABRAHAM P. SHERRILL was born at Easat Hampton, Suffolk Co. (Long Island), NY, Sept. 3rd, 1803. After pursuing the studies usually taught in the district schools of those days, he studied the higher branches at Clinton Academy, the oldest academy in the state, and was assistant principal of that institution for three years. He afterward taught select schools in Quogue, NY, and at Middletown, N.J., and in Oct., 1828, he went to Smithtown, NY, to engage in the same business. In 1832 he acted as the special messenger to receive from the clerks of the several counties on Long Island, the city of New York and the counties east of the Hudson, the official canvasses of the electoral vote of those counties, and deliver them to the secretary of State at Albany, NY. He remained in Smithtown, and was deputy county clerk until May, 1835, when he moved to the town of Pike, Wyoming Co., NY, and kept a store of general merchandise. In April, 1837, he took charge of the post-office as deputy under Judge Thomas Dole, and was afterward postmaster until April, 1841, and was subsequently appointed again by President Lincoln. Soon after he sold off his goods and devoted the time he had to spare from official duties to the pension claim and insurance business. Mr. Sherrill is a member of the Presbyterian church, has been clerk of the session nearly forty years, and one of the elders over twenty years. He was a Democrat until alienated from that party by its support of Slavery. He joined the Republican party in the support of Fremont in 1856, and Lincoln in 1860. He has been elected supervisor of that town three times, town clerk ten times and is now serving his twentieth year as postmaster. He was married to ELIZABETH SAXTON, daughter of John Saxton, at Smithtown, NY, on the 15th of Oct., 1832. They have had six children; viz: Anna Sherrill, born in Smithtown, NY, July, 1833, died March 30th, 1839; Mary E. Sherrill, who married the Rev. Charles Simpson, resides at Sherman, NY and has two children, Ella S. Simpson and Clarence E. Simpson; John Saxton Sherrill, who married Julia Parsons, of East Hampton, NY, is a Presbyterian minister at Litchfield, MN, and has one child, Bessie Sherrill; Eleanor W. Sherill, who married Rev. D.Z. Sheffield, missionary in China, and has four children, Alfred D. Sheffield, Mary E. Sheffield, Flora A. Sheffield, born in China, and Caroline L. Sheffield, born in Pike, Wyoming Co., NY; Abraham P. Sherrill,jr, an accountant in Detroit, MN and Edwin Stanton Sherrill, a graduate of Michigan University, formerly a teacher in Detroit Female Seminary and now studying medicine.
